If you come from a long line of mages you inherit what is called a "crest". This is slowly transferred to the new heir in pieces because doing so all at once may cause pain so great that the shock could kill your successor. It is like an organ transplant because for the rest of your life you need to take medicine normal people would liken to poison to stop it from rejecting your body. It is like a parasite, because if you don't die immediately it will work in any way it can to keep you alive. Knitting you back together like stitching a ripped seam. It is an archive of knowledge and something you as a mage add to over your life so that your heir has a "head start".

My sister and I were born with bodies that had extremely rare talents. We had no choice but to become mages.
