Still, being in the water is comforting in a way that is like "a homecoming," as one might say. Though he can already feel his teeth ache and skin itch to change forms.

I think you might need to change perspective. Even the most sought-after pearl started out as nothing more than an irritant to a clam. The most striking thing on a lionfish happens to be the spin-like features on its fins.
